Design of the Month
Shatto Milk Company
I was at the store the other day buying some milk. A tall man in sweats and a t-shirt was in front of the milk section looking at the Shatto milk bottles. I just wanted to be on my way so I said, “Excuse me.” He stepped back and I grabbed a bottle that looked similar to the one above. The man in the sweats looked at me and asked, “What is the difference with that milk?”
Little did he know what he was asking? Luckily I was still in a hurry. I told him about the packaging. But not as in depth as this:
“Many people ask and are excited about our packaging methods. We at Shatto Milk Company have decided to provide our milk primarily in glass bottles. The reasons for this decision are very simple. First, the glass bottle tends to keep milk colder, and colder milk is more desirable. Second, glass bottles are much more environmentally friendly than plastic or paper. Our glass bottles can be washed and reused as many times as they are returned. Thus, recycling and reusing our bottles lowers the amount of material dumped in area landfills on a daily basis. Third, unlike paper cartons or plastic, glass imparts no foreign odor or flavor. Glass is not porous, and does not breathe like plastic and paper. Unlike plastic, glass is not made from petrochemicals (ethylene glycol, polyvinyl chloride, styrene and linear low-density polyethylene). Fourth, glass bottles are most notable in history for containing farm fresh milk from the local family farm and that is exactly what you are getting from us. We want there to be no confusion – our product is different. It is handled with the utmost care and packaged in the best container available, glass.”
This design was done in 2004 but as new user I find it very effective 4 years later. The packaging along with the design of the bottle says quality and from experience it has that. I went back to the plastic bottle once after I started using this milk and it did not taste good at all.
The owner of Shatto Milk Company has recently won a national honor for excellence in farming and the minimalism design by Sullivan Higdon & Sink has been featured in design magazines, Communication Arts and Print.
Their goal is to tell the Shatto Milk Company Story. This they do in differentiated, simple, and elegant packaging of their premium milk.

Every month Arthur’s Design would like to draw attention to a design that we think has value. A design that plays an important role in the lives around us or just a creative design we think people should take notice in. This could be anything from environment design to advertising to editorial to book covers. We don’t expect everyone to like the design of the month or to think like we do but that is why we post. We desire your opinion on why you like it or why you hate it. Hopefully in doing so we can all see appreciate things differently.
Let us know if you find something worth the design of the month award and think it should be posted.
